Born in 1985, Oliver Beer lives and works in London. Stray Voices uses radio waves and explores Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). Also known as “stray voices”, EVP are unclear and unknown vocal sounds that appear in sound recordings, in radio reception or in amplification by electronic devices. They are sometimes interpreted as supernatural phenomena. An installation of sculptural elements – including the strings of an upturned grand piano – serve as antennas, which capture the electromagnetic signals that traverse the Palais de la découverte in real time. Oliver Beer and Mashrou’ Leila, a Lebanese electro-indie band collaborate to create a performance grounded in these ambiguous and ephemeral sounds. The work echoes the unheard voices of scientists, artists and musicians throughout history who have been marginalized and silenced because of gender or sexual preferences.
